There has been a lot of buzz around lifeguards hating their jobs and to some extent, that buzz is true indeed. But what are the reasons behind lifeguards hating their jobs? Let’s take a quick look at them.
1. IT IS MONOTONOUS
Yes, the fact that you have to sit at the same place and look at people having fun is definitely going to make you question your decision of becoming a lifeguard. While the occupation does have its fair share of adventures, the most part of the job is spent sitting on the high chair and looking at the crowd going crazy at the beach. The worst part is that it just does not end there, you have to repeat the same routine for days, weeks, months and even years! If you cannot imagine your life as a lifeguard who spends most part of his day sitting in his high chair and looking at the crowd, then please stay clear of this profession. It is not meant for you.
2. IT REQUIRES A LOT OF FOCUS
Sea is bigger than how it appears on our smartphones, laptops and TVs and that makes it difficult to keep track of everyone who takes a dive into the sea. A lifeguard has to stay focused and keep tabs on every person who goes inside the water and see if they have returned (not that they would not be alarmed by someone if a person goes missing). Sometimes it just gets too hard to focus on one place when you already have a lot of things to tend to, right? That is why it has become one of the most disliked professions across the world and you should not try it if you have difficulty in maintaining focus.
3. YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO STAY FIT
By staying fit, it is not implied that your bodies have to be at the peak physical conditions. Instead, your body should be in good shape and capable enough to swim in different types of sea current and for different time intervals. Also, you being fit would lead to a faster reaction time whenever an emergency takes place on the beach. Apart from that, staying physically fit would make it easier for you to be at your productive best and perform different duties of your job with great efficiency. But all that effort for a small amount does not seem worthy to a lot of individuals and hence they just give up on their jobs.
4. YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE
Multiple beaches across the world have a lot of visitors and they all behave differently at the beach. That makes it difficult for the lifeguard to manage them all at the same time. People would often come up to lifeguards with absurd questions and requests. And apart from making them mad, things like these also take their attention from more important things which might take place at the beach. So, it is a request that do not bother lifeguards unnecessarily so that they could focus on their job well.

5. YOU CAN’T ENJOY THE TIME AT BEACH
Being a lifeguard, you would share a close relationship with the beach. But that does not mean that you will get to spend a lot of fun time there. Most of the time you would be busy with people who would be at their craziest on the beach and make it difficult for other people to enjoy their time on the beach. You would have to maintain discipline on the beach and that kills your drive to have fun on the beach.
6. KIDS CAN BE PAINFUL TO DEAL WITH
Kids are certainly going to give you troubles as a lifeguard because they would come up with the most random questions and tantrums. Many lifeguards have quit their jobs because they did not want to handle kids.
7. RECERTIFICATION PROCESS
Almost all the people who have been a lifeguard are aware of how complicated the lifeguard recertification process might get sometimes and failing that process would mean that you will not be able to continue lifeguarding services anymore.
8. THE PAY IS NOT ENOUGH
As fun as the job is, despite all the negative things that have been shared above, the fact that it does not pay a lot is a major turn off for multiple aspirants. People get as low as $12 per hour and that is not just enough to survive in the USA.
The American Lifeguard Association keeps coming up with several schemes for lifeguards to make sure that they do not quit their jobs way before they actually should. But that does not seem to work out pretty well as a lot of lifeguards have left their jobs recently in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic in a hope to get better opportunities.
