Former President Donald Trump held his first rally in Arizona on Saturday, and while some supporters left the event after long waits, most seemed to enjoy the event. Despite the crowd’s enthusiasm, Trump delivered a speech that was riddled with lies and falsehoods about the 2020 election. In the speech, Trump repeated accusations of a rigged election, a claim that has been repeatedly disproved.
One of the most controversial aspects of Trump’s Arizona rally was his criticism of Republican Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake, who are both from Arizona. McCain recently lost his re-election to Democrat Ted Cruz in a runoff election, and Trump blamed the loss on McCain’s votes. While McCain is suffering from a potentially deadly form of brain cancer, he voted against the health care bill in Arizona. And Jeff Flake, another Republican senator, recently wrote a book criticizing Trump and the GOP response.
The former president also attacked Gov. Doug Ducey and the Biden Administration. And he promised to appoint Kari Lake as the next governor of Arizona. At one point, the crowd chanted “Kari! Kari!” as Trump spoke. The crowd then greeted Lake and welcomed her onstage.
Meanwhile, the upcoming Arizona GOP primary will feature several notable candidates. In addition to Lamon and Brunner, Trump also endorsed two candidates for attorney general and secretary of state. In a bid to win the party’s nomination, the winner will face Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly in November.
